Defining Lightweight Two Person Tents

If a tent weighs more than four pounds and label says "lightweight", there's something very wrong there or it's an outdated product. Most people are not aware what is meant by lightweight and so assume that the label is right. Despite the misleading label, at least tent makers made a effort to lighten up their tents even though it may not be significant.

Many tents are not even suitable for backpacking because they're too heavy. Only a few are worthy of the title. Lightweight and ultralightweight don't get the attention they deserve because manufacturers are slow to realize how big the market really is. The trend for lightweight backpacking has grown so rapidly that big names in the camping tent industry are starting to take notice.

A tent can be considered lightweight if it is below a certain maximum weight. This maximum weight differs from the type of tent in question whether it is single-walled, double-walled or floorless. Lightweight backpackers rarely ever go for 4 season tents because the extra weight is unnecessary. Be aware that "trail weight" the weight of the tent without the stakes.

Lets take a look at some types of two person tents

Single Walled Tents

This type of tent is preffered by many lightweight backpackers. They're so light that they fit into the ultralight category. This type of tent should be less than three pounds to be considered lightweight. Single-walled two person tents can be as light as 18 ounces. Now that's even lighter than many one person tents. Special care is needed for the fabric because they're usually very fragile.

Double Walled Tents

If you're looking for lightweight double-walled two person tents, it should weigh less than four pounds. The lightest in this category is about 2 pounds. The fabric and design contributes largely to the weight saving. The tent pole is made of lightweight material, commonly flexible carbon or titanium. Most ultralight tents employ a one pole design.

Lightweight tents are usually small to shave off unnecessary weight. If you're tall, you should check physical and try to get into the tent to see if the space is big enough for you. Ventilation in tents is important whatever the size, because depending on the weather, condensation can get quite severe.

Floorless Tents

Floorless tents are extremely light but they're not very good at keeping out the bugs at night. This type on two person tent should be no heavier than 2 pounds. A ground sheet is no substitute for a tent floor but they're great for protecting your camping mattress and sleeping bag. This tent is favored by minimalist ultralight backpackers who also want the space of a two person tent.
